Soon To Be a Fond Farewell

Thank you to everyone who has supported us over the past 3 years

Some of you might have already seen from our social media channels or in the local news that we have had to make the tough decision to cancel our International Open Art Competition 2025 and close the Gallery, with Saturday 16th August 2025 being our last trading day.

While it fills us with great sadness having to make this announcement, we have been finding solace looking back over what we have achieved over the past three years, with the amazing people that have come through the Gallery's door and the fantastic art we have seen from our superb Gallery Artists or from our International Open Art Competition.

Endings are always uncomfortable but there are usually specks of new hope and opportunity that can be found that help with the change.

We are still open and have on display incredible work by our Gallery Artists which are available to be purchased.

So please do pop down to the Gallery or check out out our Gallery Artist Pages as we are still able to facilitate remote purchasing.

A final note needs to be said for the Gallery Artists that we have had the pleasure to work with over the years. We would like to thank our current Gallery Artists for supporting us through to the closure date and we are in discussion with other galleries to see if we can find new space for as many as possible. We have crossed paths and found some very talented people and it has been great to give a platform to showcase their work.

Penny Solway Proudly Announced as the art unlimited's 2025 Young Person Bursary Awardee

A Chain of Mayors gathered to endorse the presentation of the 2025 Art Unlimited Young Person’s Bursary which was awarded to Penny Solway of Woodroffe School, Lyme Regis, Dorset on Saturday 14th June 2025 in the Art Unlimited Gallery, South Street, Bridport, Dorset, DT6 3NR.

Howard Flanagan, owner of Art Unlimited and initiator of this Award was joined by Cllr Anne Rickard, Mayor of Bridport and Cllr Philip Evans MBE, Mayor of Lyme Regis to present Penny with her Bursary cheque for £2500.

The Bursary has been funded by entry fees from the 2024 Art Unlimited International Open Art Competition. This Award was created to support young student artists within the community and encourage their further education.

Howard Flanagan: ‘We are keen to work closely with both schools and colleges as well as the business community in order to foster young talent and develop a platform here in Bridport from which they can shine.’

Students from local schools including Bridport’s Sir John Colfox Academy, Woodroffe School in Lyme Regis, Beaminster School and Thomas Hardye in Dorchester were invited to submit a 250-word personal statement stating what this award would mean to their future artistic career.

Penny who has already been accepted into her UAL Art & Design Foundation course told us how ‘transformative’ this would be for her enabling her not only to invest in better equipment and tools with which to reflect the full extent of her ideas, but to get out of the studio and explore creation elsewhere. ‘This funding would mean that someone believed in my potential and that belief would push me to make the absolute most of this year.’

The 2025 Competition is currently open for online submissions until Friday 4th July 2025 (NOW EXTENDED UNTIL MONDAY 14th July 2025) with this year’s entry fees going towards the 2025/26 Bursary,

The Shortlisted artists will be announced on 1st August 2025.

An exhibition of all the finalists’ works will be on display at The Malthouse Gallery, Town Mill, Lyme Regis from 6th- 18th September 2025.

New Competition Category for 2025

We are delighted to announce the launch of Best Dorset Artist category for our 2025 Competition which is sponsored by Dorset Hideaways .

All artists that reside within the county boundary of Dorset are eligible.

Whilst we are an international competition eager to discover and show art from around the globe, Dorset is very much our home base. The county has a wealth of diverse creativity that deserves to be recognised and celebrated.

Our aim is that the Best Dorset Artist category will provide a platform from which we can display the talent and creativity of the artists that call this picturesque county their home.

New Competition Category - The Adapted Class Origin Story

The origin story of The Adapted Class

Fresh for the 2025 International Open Art Competition we have introduced two new category prizes into the Competition, Best Dorset Artist and The Adapted Class. Focusing on The Adapted Class, we wanted to share the inception of this new category and how it became part of the 2025 Competition.

The Adapted Class came into being after a colleague of Howard’s (Art Unlimited owner and artist) heard about the growing success of the Competition in 2024 and suggested there should be a category in the Competition for artists that paint with adapted tools. This was inspired by her own experience in having to use homemade adapted tools to complete her art A level due to the effects of cerebral palsy. She felt that it would be a great opportunity to highlight and give recognition to artists that paint in a similar manner.

Acknowledging the weight and importance of this suggestion, Howard threw his energy and enthusiasm behind making this a reality and creating a category for these artists in the 2025 Competition.

After consultation with his colleague and the Art Unlimited team conducting further research, an appropriate sponsor was found in the form of Stannah , and The Adapted Class was born.

The Adapted Class is open to artists who:

• paint with their mouth or feet and those that hold a pen, pencil, crayon or palette knife in this manner

• those who use adapted tools in order to hold a brush, pen, pencil, crayon or palette knife

Artists that enter The Adapted Class are also eligible for the other category prizes in the Competition, if applicable to their work.

We hope that with the introduction of this new class we can help shine a light on this talented group of artists, giving them a new platform from which they can sparkle and promote Art Unlimited’s ethos of being open to all whilst showcasing great art.

Our 2025 International Open Art Competition Is Now Open For Entries!

We are proud to announce that our 2025 International Open Art Competition is OPEN FOR ENTRIES.

Along with a fantastic top prize of £5,000 we have two new category prizes fresh for this year, and our other category prizes too.

The new categories are Best Dorset Artist - for artists that are based in Dorset - and The Adapted Class - for artists who paint with their mouth or feet or use adapted tools to create their art.

A fun exhibition celebrating scapa joe's love of the ocean

Fun Christmas Countdown with Gallery Artists while raising money for charity

20 of our Gallery Artists are helping us with the countdown to Christmas, with Christmas baubles they have created especially for us in their own unique style.

Starting today and finishing on Wednesday 18th of December, we will be revealing the different baubles created by the Gallery Artists each day and showcasing the work of the featured Artist.

You also have the opportunity to potentially own some of these fantastic baubles by entering our Prize Draw, where all proceeds are going to the charity - The Bank of Dreams and Nightmares .

A fortnight to showcase the more pocket Friendly art work from gallery artists

From Monday 18th until Saturday 30th November, we will be holding an fortnight Exhibition to prominently display art work from our Gallery Artists that is priced between £25 - £200.

It will be a great event to pick up any Christmas presents or for a small indulgence in a treat for yourself!

Art, Artists and Awards - a beautiful Awards evening with a buzzing vibe

The evening of Saturday 14th September 2024, saw us hosting our Awards Night for our International Open Art Competition 2024, at the Malthouse Gallery, at The Town Mill, Lyme Regis, where our Finalist Exhibition for our 2024 Competition was held.

The evening was an opportunity to celebrate the mesmerising artwork and talent shown by the Finalists from this years Competition and to announce the Competition's category winners - excluding the People's Choice Award which was announced on Sunday 29th September via social media.

In attendance on the night were; the finalist artists and their loved ones, the amazing sponsors who support the different category prizes for the Competition, the fantastic judges who choose the winning artwork and other brilliant people who help bring our Competition to life.

The evening had a buoyant, buzzing feeling with guests talking with one another and important network connections were made.

Fantastic Night of In Person Judging for our International Open Art Competition 2024

The evening of Thursday 12th September, saw the in person judging of our International Open Art 2024 take place, at The Malthouse Gallery, The Town Mill, Lyme Regis.

Our wonderful judges, Lady Victoria Conran, Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke and Richard Vine, came and cast their eyes over the Finalist artworks we had on display, scoring each work in each of the different judging areas.

We are truly grateful to the judges for giving their time and giving their opinion on each of the artworks we had on display.

The Exhibition showcasing the finalist artwork for our international open art competition 2024 is Open!

It's been a cracking start to our Exhibition of the Finalist Artworks from our International Open Art Competition 2024, since we opened the Exhibition doors on Tuesday.

Coming from the Malthouse Gallery, The Town Mill, Lyme Regis, for the first time this year, the Exhibition has already been well attended by visitors and has had great feedback.

The Exhibition is open daily, 9am - 5pm from now until the 22nd of September and you can view the artwork online if you are not able to attend in person.

a record number of entries has been received for our international open art competition 2024!

We are delighted to announce that our International Open Art Competition, that closed for entries on Wednesday, has received a record number of entries!

We have been blown away by the response of Artists entering our Competition which has seen an 50% increase on last years entries.

We now have the difficult job of distilling all the entries down to our finalists, whose work will be hung in a Finalists Exhibition , that we will be hosting at The Malthouse Gallery, The Town Mill, Lyme Regis, DT7 3PU on the 10th-22nd of September.

The finalists will be announced on Friday 16th August, so check in with us again soon to see the results!

First Art Unlimited Bursary Awarded

Art Unlimited awarded its first Bursary on Saturday with the endorsement of a Chain of Mayors

A Chain of Mayors gathered to endorse the presentation of the first Art Unlimited Young Person’s Bursary which was awarded to Kathryn Conway of Woodroffe School, Lyme Regis, Dorset on Saturday 22nd June 2024 in the Art Unlimited Gallery on South Street, Bridport, Dorset, DT6 3NR.

Howard Flanagan, owner of Art Unlimited and initiator of this inaugural Award was joined by Cllr Anne Rickard, Mayor of Bridport and Cllr David Ruffle, Mayor of Lyme Regis to present Kathryn with her Bursary cheque for £2500.

Kathryn's family, Richard Vine (Kathryn's art tutor from Woodroffe School), Alex Alsop (Director of Norrsken Windows , sponsor of the Competition's Best in Show Award for 2024) and the Mayors' partners were also in attendance.

The Bursary has been funded by entry fees from the 2023 Art Unlimited International Open Art Competition and the generosity of an anonymous donor. This inaugural Award was created to support young student artists within the community and their further education.

Students from local schools including Bridport’s Sir John Colfox Academy and Woodroffe School in Lyme Regis were invited to submit a 250-word personal statement stating what this award would mean to their future artistic career.

Kathryn’s stood out as this excerpt clearly demonstrates: ‘What this bursary could provide for me is resources to create art and to sell my work as an artist, as well as access to paid-for online courses in addition to my university studies. Having the ability to take further courses would drastically improve my skills, ready for my career as an artist. Having higher skills would also limit competition against me in finding the best jobs, something that is even more important nowadays with the pressure created by AI.’

There was a great feeling in the Gallery at the presentation on Saturday and Cllr Anne Rickard shared it was: 'So good to know young people are being recognised and encouraged in this way [Bursary]. It was heart-warming to witness this happening here in Bridport'.

The 2024 Competition is currently open for online submissions until Wednesday 31st July 2024 with this year’s entry fees going towards at least two 2024/25 Bursaries .

The Shortlisted artists will be announced on 16th August 2024.

An exhibition of all the finalists ’ works will be on display at The Malthouse Gallery, Town Mill, Lyme Regis from 10th – 22nd September 2024.

Awards night

On Friday the 21st of October 2022, Art Unlimited held their first awards night for their annual Open Art Competition. It was a great evening with many of the artists who got through to the final in attendance.

The judges were highly impressed with the standard of entries and the final scores were very close.

1st prize

First Prize was awarded to Steven Marshall with Undercurrent. This interesting painting is painted using enamel paint on a panel, then framed in a complementary white frame. The judges were very taken with the paintings individual style, the complexity of the design and its final composition. This painting will be on display and on sale in Art Unlimited the Gallery in Bridport until 5th November 2022.

Debbie's love of sewing has led her to broaden her skills into hand-embroidered pictures, although no formal education in Art, Debbie has spent years experimenting within her craft. Developing her skill through happy accidents and complete disasters. As time went on the disasters becomes less and the work developed and matured.

Debbie has exhibited in many shows over the years however Art Unlimited will be featuring er in her first Solo Exhibition.
